If plants can learn and adapt, are they intelligent?

This fascinating paper from Nautilus explores the way plants learn, from adapting their foliage to new conditions through to changing their reflexes.

When they grow, they even reinforce their trunks in specific places depending on where micro-tears appear.

Is that to say plants can feel pain or notice different conditions? And if so, how do they sense and store the information?
