How to speak so that people want to listen | Julian Treasure
7 bad habits to get rid of (as they don’t bring anything to the table):
- Gossip
- Judging
- Negativity
- Complaining
- Making excuses
- Embroidery / exaggeration
- Dogmatism – the confusion of facts and opinions
The HAIL model:
- Honesty – being true and clear
- Authenticity – being yourself
- Integrity – doing what you say
- Love – wishing people well
The 6 tools to modulate your voice:
- register: we tend to vote for politicians with lower registers, when the voice comes from the chest, as we associate depth with power and authority
- timbre: we prefer voices which are rich, warm and smooth
- prosody: the antithesis of monotonic or repetitive voice
- pace: slow to emphasize, and use silence from time to time
- pitch:
- volume: to make people pay attention, lower the volume; to broadcast, go loud
How to warm-up your voice prior to an important talk:
- Arms up, deep breathe in, big sigh
- Repeat a simple sound from the tip of your lips – Bo bo bo bo
- Make your lips tremble – as if imitating a horse as a kid
- Repeat in an exaggerated manner – La la la la
- Roll a very long “R”
- Go up and down from low “oom” to high “wee” several times
